Everything You Need to Know About Terpenes

Terpenes are oils secreted by the same pot plant glands that produce THC and CBD during bloom. While there are more than 100 cannabinoids naturally occurring in cannabis, only a small fraction are psychoactive. THC and CBD are the primary cannabinoids, which come with a wide array of medical benefits. THC is particularly effective when treating conditions like high triglyceride counts, arthritis, inflammatory conditions, inflammatory bowel disease and more. CBD butter and oils derived from industrial hemp have also been shown to have powerful medicinal properties.

Here are some of the most common terpenes found in the cannabis industry:

Limonene

Limonene is recognized for its citrus fragrance and is typically associated with lemons. This zesty terpene is often used for its anti-inflammatory, anti-anxiety and antibacterial properties. Zing!

Myrcene

Known for its sedative qualities, myrcene is commonly used as a sleep aid. The scent of myrcene resembles cloves, containing earthy and musky notes.

Pinene

Taken from its namesake, pinene has a pine scent and is thought to boost memory performance. Pinene terpenes are also thought to instill a sense of euphoria and increased alertness.

Caryophyllene

Caryophyllene has a spicy and peppery profile, containing anti-inflammatory properties. It is also commonly used as an antifungal, antiseptic and antibacterial treatment.

Terpinolene

Terpinolene contains a combination of scents, a mixture of pine, floral, and a hint of citrus. It contains antioxidant properties and can induce minor drowsiness, while also reducing anxiety.

Terpenes are responsible for much of what we know and love about nature – from how it smells to how it tastes. They play an integral role in how our sense receptors operate, and they help keep our immune system strong. Some find that certain scents can be overwhelming and cause irritation or nausea if they’re too powerful. Others relate scent to wonderful memories from their past. Terpenes are more powerful when combined and different combinations produce different scents and effects-- known as the entourage effect.
